November 21, 2012

Outside Temp: 34 F (Rainy and stormy today... a little sleet.)

What I cooked today:
Pumpkin Pies x 4: I'm making dessert for tomorrow, and Friday, so I just made 4 of them tonight.  It's been a while since I've made pumpkin pie, and pie crust, so I was a little worried.  But it turned out fine (after I asked Patrick to stop making suggestions).  I spilled a little pie mix in the oven, which caused a lot of smoke, but they smelled good by the end.  Now, I just have to hope they taste good!

Update:
No, I didn't fall off the face of the earth.  I was tired and fell asleep early last night, which means that I didn't get my blog written.  I debated post-dating a blog entry, which is totally possible, but that would feel like lying, and those who know me know how I feel about lying.  So, if you noticed that I didn't get an entry written last night, I apologize.

Yesterday was a busy.  I worked at the post office, by myself, in the morning.  I started the shift by forgetting to scan something, which caused a little stress.  But the customer (one of our neighbors, of course) was kind enough to bring it in this morning, so we got it scanned and all was right with the world.  This was my first time working by myself, so there was a reasonable amount of nerves for the first few minutes.  I talked to my postmaster a few times during the day, but I think it worked out fine.

After working, I ran over to the school for our class, and then headed home, with 3 of the 4 kids.  Allen was so excited to have NO practice!

I managed to get a migraine, so I headed off to bed and left Patrick in charge for the night.  He had to feed the kids, do all of Ryan's meds, and get them off to bed (at some point).  Apparently, he did fine because when I woke up this morning, the kids were all in bed, dishes and pots and pans were on the stove (waiting patiently for me to clean them) and Ryan was fine.  Who knew that my husband could actually be responsible?

Today, Allen and Connor went into town with me.  They needed their allergy shots and I needed groceries.  I'm not having Thanksgiving at my house, but I do have to feed my family on other days, and somehow, I was out of milk, again.  We also stopped and got new headphones for the boys.  Connor has re-found his MP3 player, so he was excited to use his ear buds and listen to his music.  Ahh, it's the little things (like the Hershey's candy bars on sale for $0.68...)

Patrick and Grandpa were awesome and took my garbage to the dump.  We've been trying to get to the dump for a few weeks now, but something (like snow or wind) always seemed to come up.  Today was no exception, with the rain and sleet, but they braved the weather and got rid of my garbage!  Woo hoo!

The boys spent the rest of the afternoon playing games, and I read my book (I'm reading 'The Count of Monte Cristo', which is much better than I expected!)  I mixed up and baked my pumpkin pies, but I didn't feel like making dinner, so I subjected the kids to their own devices.  Which means that when I offered to make hot dogs, they all said, "me too!".  So, I ended up making dinner anyway.  I don't feel bad about feeding them junk for dinner tonight, since we are all going to pig out tomorrow... it's kind of like fasting.

March 4, 2012

Outside Temp: 47 F (it was actually in the 50's today, we opened the windows and aired out the house)

What I cooked today:
Burgers and Lentil Soup: Patrick wanted soup, but he informed me that he wanted soup after I defrosted the hamburger.  Oh well, he liked the soup and we still got burgers for dinner.  Win-win.

Update:
Nice relaxing day today!

Allen went skiing with Grandpa and Katie and Connor spent most of the day playing LOTRO on the computers.  Spoiled kids, who I was tempted to throw outside, since it was warm enough to go outside and play.  But, they were enjoying themselves so much, I couldn't make them quit.  The day consisted of dialog such as:

K: Hey, where are you?  I'm killing this wild boar.

C: I'm collecting berries.

K: Wait!  I am too!  How many have you collected?

C: 4.

K: No fair!  I only have 2!

C: Do you need help killing the pigs?

K: Yea, I've already killed 3, but I need to kill 2 more.

C: Okay, I'll help you kill the pigs, once I get the last berry.

Ahhh, my kids helping each other out.  I love it.

We also got the garbage dumped, which was sadly overdue.  Our dump is so awesome.  Not only is it easy, but it doesn't stink.  I was expecting miles and miles of rotting, smelly garbage.  Instead, there was 3-4 very large dumpster bins.  You just pulled up to the top of the hill, and tossed your garbage from the back of the truck into a bin.  Easy!

February 1, 2012

Outside Temp: 41 F (it was supposed to snow tonight... I don't really see that happening unless it drops another 10 degrees, and starts raining... maybe tomorrow... )

What I cooked today:
Orange Chicken: Katie had to do the dishes tonight, so I thought if I made something she liked, she might not complain as much.  Although she was not happy, she did the dishes without complaint.  Woo Hoo!

Update:
We saw a house that we might be renting today.  Although it needs some work, mostly just a little love and a little elbow grease, we have a few things we need to check on first.  Most important would be if the location can get DSL.  I'm not sure Patrick could survive with dial up.  :)

Allen got to go to a Health Care Career Day in Great Falls today.  He really enjoyed himself (I think because he got to miss half of the school day)!  Of course, he's only 13 and in 7th grade, so he has a while before he really has to think about long term careers.  But it was great to get him thinking about stuff like this early.  He kept asking if I thought it would be a good idea for him to be a surgeon.  I laughed.  Uhhh, sure.  Why not?

Most important, I finally got my garbage dumped!  Patrick and his dad took the garbage to the dump this afternoon, which was so totally awesome.  Who knew, a little thing like removal of garbage could feel so awesome.

I'm also working on a new project.  I haven't programmed in a while (I was kind of busy with homeschooling and stuff like that), but I find myself with some free time lately.  So, I decided to work on a web site application that can keep track of my recipes and my meal planning.  If I do it right, I can select recipes, drag and drop them on the calendar, then print out both the meal plan and  the shopping list.  Since I have to plan my meals in advance, since I can't run to the store to pick up green onions or sugar anymore, it would make things easier if I had a program to help me keep track of it.

I sometimes forget how much I LOVE to write computer programs.  Patrick and I first met in a computer lab (yes, I know, totally geeky), and our first couple of weeks consisted of him helping me through my first computer classes.  That feeling I get when I make something work, is just awesome.  I know, most people might think it's lame, but that's me.

I'll update when the program gets a little further along.  If it's something that something thinks they can use, I can design it to have multiple users.  And if it's just me, that's okay too!

January 31, 2012

Outside Temp:  34 F (it's still windy outside, but not too bad.)

What I cooked today:
Pizza and Bread sticks: We got our kit from Little Caesars for Allen's Fundraising last month.  It included 3 medium pepperoni pizzas and bread sticks.  We also got individual pizzas and cinnamon sticks, but I saved those for another day.  The kit was really easy, just pull out the already formed crust, slather on the sauce, sprinkle on the cheese, place the pepperoni and throw in the oven.  8 minutes later, a nice warm pizza is available to be inhaled.  Patrick even liked it, and he is very picky about what he eats.  I should have bought more!

Update:
Patrick and I spent the day in Great Falls today.  Ryan was feeling a little punky and he had a cough, so we let him stay with Grandma and Grandpa and watch movies all day (we didn't think it would be right to bring him into town or school).

We stopped at the Pierce Homes site, where they have some amazing modular homes.  Of course, they all looked way too big for us.  We are not really in the market to buy anything now, but we wanted to see what our options were.  Since, if we were to actually buy a modular home, we would have a basement and the kids would all have their own rooms in the basement, we really only need a master bedroom, a kitchen, a dining room and (maybe) a family room.  Perhaps an office or somewhere we can put the computers.  But that would only come out to a 2 bedroom house, which they didn't have on site.  It was a great experience to see how nice these places looked inside.  There was one with an amazing kitchen, that I was just drooling over.  Ahhh, how nice it would be to have a large kitchen with some actual counter space.  But I'm still just grateful for working electrical and plumbing.

We also stopped by the Treasurer's office and got our permit to use the local dump.  Since our place is out in the middle of nowhere, it's quite expensive to have garbage service.  Patrick's dad had a permit last year, so they would go to the dump every 2-3 weeks, and remove all our garbage.  But, since the permit expired at the end of the year, we have been waiting to get our permit since the first of January.  Which honestly means there is a large pile in my garage, waiting patiently for us to remove it.  Fortunately, it's been quite cold, so nothing is growing in there and there's no smell.  But it's annoying and really needs to be removed.  I'm hoping that Patrick can borrow his dads truck this week and get rid of my garbage soon!

We stopped at Office Max, since I had some office supplies I needed to pick up.  Allen needed a day-timer to keep track of his homework (since he's apparently forgetting some) and I needed a new binder.  Oh my goodness, thing are a lot more expensive outside of 'Back to School' time.  Over $5 for a binder?  Are you kidding me?  They are about $2.50 at Wal-mart.  That was the last time I'm going there for things I can get at Wal-Mart.  Geez.

And, after we got home, Allen wanted to bring Grandma her pizzas.  And, since Allen is about 13 1/2 now, I figured it was time.  I let him drive up to the Grandparents, and back.  It's about 2 1/2 miles on a dirt road.  He did great!  Although, he needs to learn about how hard to push the brake, and sometimes it's okay to go 30 MPH and sometimes you need to slow down to 20 MPH.  I figure all that will come with time.  I'm so excited to be able to teach him out here, with no one on the road, in a pretty safe environment.  He was so proud of himself!
