November 21, 2012

Outside Temp: 34 F (Rainy and stormy today... a little sleet.)

What I cooked today:
Pumpkin Pies x 4: I'm making dessert for tomorrow, and Friday, so I just made 4 of them tonight.  It's been a while since I've made pumpkin pie, and pie crust, so I was a little worried.  But it turned out fine (after I asked Patrick to stop making suggestions).  I spilled a little pie mix in the oven, which caused a lot of smoke, but they smelled good by the end.  Now, I just have to hope they taste good!

Update:
No, I didn't fall off the face of the earth.  I was tired and fell asleep early last night, which means that I didn't get my blog written.  I debated post-dating a blog entry, which is totally possible, but that would feel like lying, and those who know me know how I feel about lying.  So, if you noticed that I didn't get an entry written last night, I apologize.

Yesterday was a busy.  I worked at the post office, by myself, in the morning.  I started the shift by forgetting to scan something, which caused a little stress.  But the customer (one of our neighbors, of course) was kind enough to bring it in this morning, so we got it scanned and all was right with the world.  This was my first time working by myself, so there was a reasonable amount of nerves for the first few minutes.  I talked to my postmaster a few times during the day, but I think it worked out fine.

After working, I ran over to the school for our class, and then headed home, with 3 of the 4 kids.  Allen was so excited to have NO practice!

I managed to get a migraine, so I headed off to bed and left Patrick in charge for the night.  He had to feed the kids, do all of Ryan's meds, and get them off to bed (at some point).  Apparently, he did fine because when I woke up this morning, the kids were all in bed, dishes and pots and pans were on the stove (waiting patiently for me to clean them) and Ryan was fine.  Who knew that my husband could actually be responsible?

Today, Allen and Connor went into town with me.  They needed their allergy shots and I needed groceries.  I'm not having Thanksgiving at my house, but I do have to feed my family on other days, and somehow, I was out of milk, again.  We also stopped and got new headphones for the boys.  Connor has re-found his MP3 player, so he was excited to use his ear buds and listen to his music.  Ahh, it's the little things (like the Hershey's candy bars on sale for $0.68...)

Patrick and Grandpa were awesome and took my garbage to the dump.  We've been trying to get to the dump for a few weeks now, but something (like snow or wind) always seemed to come up.  Today was no exception, with the rain and sleet, but they braved the weather and got rid of my garbage!  Woo hoo!

The boys spent the rest of the afternoon playing games, and I read my book (I'm reading 'The Count of Monte Cristo', which is much better than I expected!)  I mixed up and baked my pumpkin pies, but I didn't feel like making dinner, so I subjected the kids to their own devices.  Which means that when I offered to make hot dogs, they all said, "me too!".  So, I ended up making dinner anyway.  I don't feel bad about feeding them junk for dinner tonight, since we are all going to pig out tomorrow... it's kind of like fasting.

Outside Temp: 50 F (it was almost freezing this morning, 33, and it got up to 80!)

What I cooked today:
Nothing... Grandma and Grandpa got a new bar-b-que today, so we went up there for dinner.  Sometimes, it takes a while to learn how to make a new device work well.  But, with a little extra time on the stove, the meat was moist and delicious!  And Grandma paired it with corn and tater tots and beans... Could you ask for more?

Update:
I have finally finished my training at the post office!  The funny part is that my work there will be only a relief, which means I only have to work if the regular postmistress can't make it.  Which means that I probably won't be working much... perhaps a little around Christmas and maybe during the winter when the snows are bad.  And, since it may be a month or 2 before I work again, I'm sure things will change between now and then.  Which means that some of my training will have been useless.  Oh well, I guess that's how it works!

Katie would have had a Volleyball game today in Melstone (which is about 3 hours away, one way!!), but, since she's young (and inexperienced), she asked if she could skip it.  Yea!  If she had gone, she would have left school around noon and wouldn't have been home until about midnight!  I was so grateful that her coach let her out of the game.  I can imagine for Varsity or perhaps College sports, but she's only in 5th grade!

We are 'dog sitting' for one of our neighbors, and Katie has become very attached to the 12 year old black lab.  Of course, she (the dog) has arthritis and other medical issues, as she's old and that's just what happens.  But, Katie has never had a pet get old on her.  The cats we had in CA all got eaten by coyotes, so she never saw them old.  I'm sure this will be a good life lesson for her, but it's hard in the 'during' stage.

Tomorrow should be a slightly relaxing day.  I have to process 20 lbs of peaches and can them, along with roasting peppers and canning them.  But, other than that, I should be bored... I hope...

Outside Temp: 43 (high of 66... I couldn't ask for better!!)

What I cooked today:
Nothing... we went into town for dinner.

Update:
Totally busy day today!

I worked at the post office until 1:30, then ran over to the school to work until 3:30.  I had a great day in our Web Design class.  Today was the first official day of their class, so we actually had something to do.  I don't think there is anything worse than bored teenagers.  The last week and half, they were just killing time until their class started.  We were able to get through all of their assignments and there was only a minimal amount of grumbling or complaining.  Woo hoo!

After school, Connor worked on his 7th grade Science homework.  We are not sure when he will be able to officially start the 7th grade, but we don't want him too far behind on his class work.  So, he will be doing the assignments at home until such time as he can officially be in class.

Then, since we had to run into Great Falls to get Ryan's dressing changed, we decided to bring all the kids into town with us as soon as practice was over.  Allen brought the tablet computer, so he could work on his homework.  Connor has his computer, so he could work on his story.  Ryan had his IPad, so he could play games and Katie brought her book, so she could read.  The car ride was amazingly quiet and there was no fighting or complaining.

We stopped for dinner, got a few groceries, got gas for the car and then headed into the hospital, where the nurses were ready to change his dressing on his line.  The kids hung out in the 'waiting room', where Allen finished his homework and everyone behaved.  Ryan got his dressing changed pretty quickly (in less than 20 minutes, since we just had to chat with our nurses), and then we headed back home.

It was great to have Allen be able to grab his USB drive from the tablet, plug it into the main computer, and print off his homework for 2 different classes with no problems.

Tomorrow, I get to substitute teach for the PE/Business/Accounting teacher, which I'm sure will be fun.  Okay, not the PE part, but the business and accounting part!  I really hated PE in school...

July 9, 2012

Outside Temp: 61 F (it was in the 90's for most of the afternoon.  And, even though it was still in the high 80's in the house, it didn't feel as bad as yesterday.  Maybe I'm getting used to the heat. )

What I cooked today:
Grandma made dinner tonight, so I didn't have to start my oven.  Yea!!  We lived on sandwiches, yogurt, hot dogs (in the microwave) and cereal... all items that don't require an oven.  I think I'm going to break down and get a BBQ.

Update:
Patrick and I are both working like crazy to try to get this project finished.  The client hasn't given us a deadline, but it will probably be shown later this week, so we are working around the clock until it's 'ready' (although, in my mind, it's NEVER good enough, I think we might be close).  Patrick was still up at 8am, when I crawled my tail out of bed.  But working in the heat is never fun.

We did accomplish more today than we did yesterday, so we might be getting used to the heat.

Grandpa brought our lawn mower back down this morning, and he and Allen mowed and weed-whacked the backyard.  Boy, did it need it!  But, I felt bad with them out there, on the mower, in 90+ heat.  Allen was wrapped up in a soaking wet towel, which he said helped with the pollen and grass that was floating around him as he mowed.  I think it also helped with the heat and the sun, since he didn't end up getting burned!

The local post office had need of a 'Relief' person, to help out when the postmistress can't make it into work.  So, as you can expect, I applied for the position.  I know, for those who know me, and my comments on the government, you may be surprised at this move.  But, the post office is kind of important in our little town, and I really wanted to help out our community.

So, today, I got in my e-mail box, my request for background check and drug test.  Ahh, the joys of applying for a federal position.  The paperwork for the background check went fine, but for the drug test, the 'system' couldn't find a location close to me for me to drop off my 'sample'.  I called their 800 number, and the (very nice) woman in customer service asked me:

"How far away is Sioux Falls, ND?"

I laughed and said: "Pretty far.  It's in another state.  Probably about 8-10 hours drive."

"Oh, well, that won't work.  What about Fargo, SD?"

"Uh, no."

"Hmmm, what big city are you near?"

"Great Falls."

"And what state is that in?"

(Are you kidding me?) "Montana."

"Hmmm, not there.  Any other big cities near you?"

"There's Helena, but it's about 2 hours away."

"No, no clinics in Helena, that are in our network.  I guess we'll have to choose an Out-Of-Network Clinic."

So, after her checking with most of the state, and a 200 mile radius of Great Falls, she decided that I would have to pick an out-of-network clinic... which is in Great Falls.

I can just imagine, if she found an 'In-Network' clinic in Butte or Missoula (about 3 hours away), I would have to go there.  But, since she couldn't, I could go to Great Falls.  All, just for a 'relief' position.  I would use up my first 3 month's paycheck on gas alone, for the drug test.

There are a few choice comments I could make here, but, I'll just be grateful that she was nice and it will all work out.
