Outside Temp: 61 F (It was still hot today, although I was inside an air conditioned hospital most of the day, so I didn't really care.)
What I cooked today:
Still nothing. I think I may have forgotten how to cook.
Update:
Day 2 in the hospital:
Ryan is doing much better, as of right now (10:27 pm). It was a very long, interesting day.
So, overnight, he continued to have fevers, although they weren't too high (in the mid 103's). Then, around 10-11pm, he started throwing up. Which was okay for the first few hours, but once his tummy was empty, then he started with the dry heaving. Ugh, is there anything worse? Of course, for Ryan, he has a problem with varicies in his esophagus (veins in the throat), which, when put under stress (such as dry heaving), have a tendency to rupture and bleed. So, around 5am, he threw up a bunch of blood. Lovely.
Fortunately, it only happened the once, and the doctors immediately changed his anti-nausea medicine to something stronger. We checked his labs and his blood numbers were fine, and there was no bleeding anywhere else, so we're crossing our fingers that it was just a one time thing.
His blood cultures came back with a Staph Aureus (which is similar to staph epi, which is the skin contaminate that sometimes shows up). It's usually associated with surgical wounds, and wouldn't you know it, we have a surgical wound that is having trouble. Hmm, I think there might be a relation there.
Of course, Staph Aureus is a gram-positive bug, and we usually get gram-negative bugs, so the antibiotics that we started yesterday were pretty much useless. We switched him to the right antibiotic this afternoon, and he's feeling much better.
I feel much better as well, now that we know what the problem is, and he's being treated accordingly. It was kind of hard last night, knowing that he'd had a few doses of antibiotics, and he was not getting any better. We also know that it's due to the problems that we are having with his new line, not something that Patrick or I did wrong with his TPN or accessing his line (that's always a concern, with the 'could I have caused this? or could I have done something different?' questions).
Patrick switched with me this afternoon, so that I could not only get a night's rest at home, but I could go to the school board meeting tomorrow night, and also head over to the school tomorrow to check up on our web design class. School starts in 3 days, and I'm actually getting kind of excited.
Of course, on the way home, it was dark and I was very cautious, looking out for deer ( I did see 2 deer in the ditch next to the road, but fortunately, none of them felt it necessary to run out into the road and get hit). But, while driving up to the grandparent's house to get Katie and Connor, I did manage to hit a porcupine. This thing was huge! I guess I imagined that a porcupine would be about the size of a cat, but this was the size of medium sized dog. Of course, he was just meandering across the road, like he had nothing else going on. And, of course, I was going about 35-40, on the dirt road, which means that I couldn't really stop. I slowed down a bit, and he went under the car. I guess I managed to have the tires miss him, since I didn't hear a dreaded 'thump, thump' of him going under my tires.
I immediately turned around (it's a narrow road, so it took about 5 3-point turns to get turned around), and I just caught him wandering off into the grass on the side of the road. I guess even getting hit didn't phase him. I did see where he went under my car, because there was a small patch of quills on the road. I was just grateful there was no blood!

Outside Temp: 48 F (clear and beautiful today... in the 70's)
What I cooked today:
Chicken Soup: Since it was only Patrick and I (and Ryan) for dinner, we went with Chicken Soup... with my new stock from our home grown chickens... Really, really good!
Update:
This morning, 3 of my 4 kids jumped in the car with Grandma and took off for California for the week. It was so quiet around the house today, that Ryan slept in until after noon!
Once he woke up, and took his shower, Patrick asked him where the other kids were.
"They're sleeping." was his response, even though it was 1 in the afternoon.
"Nope. They're not here."
Hmmm, really? Which prompted him to explore through the house, calling "Allen? Connor? My Brothers? Katie? My Sister? Hmmm, not here."
I expected him to be upset, but he just went out and played with the chicks. Then, later, he went out in the front yard and played with the sidewalk chalk. Then, he play acted that he was the Hulk and he went through smashing everything.
I guess he survived without his siblings.
Patrick and I worked all afternoon. We have a big project we have been working on for a client out of state. Which means that I spent most of the day in front of the computer. I did give myself an hour to go clean Katie's room (which is on my list of things to accomplish while the kids are gone), so that I could be sure that I could have something accomplished by the end of the day.
I admit, I kind of missed the kids this afternoon (and not just because no one else was there to do the dishes or the laundry), but I think they will have a really good time. They made really good time, and made it to Provo, UT safely tonight. Grandma only had to threaten them for the first hour or two, but the next 8 were okay.
While checking on Ryan playing the front yard, I did manage to catch a picture of a few new friends in the field next to our house. So cute!

Outside Temp: 35 F (foggy in the morning, clear as a bell in the afternoon!)
What I cooked today:
Sweet and Sour Chicken: Exhausted from our ski day (not sure exactly why, since I didn't ski), I decided to make something easy. I know, it doesn't sound easy, but it totally is! I put the rice in the microwave for 22 minutes (I need to add an extra 2 minutes, I think because of the altitude). Cut up the chicken, toss in a Ziploc with green onions, ginger, oil and cornstarch. Then put in the frying pan for about 10 minutes. While that's cooking, cut up some onions, celery, carrots and peppers (pineapple is already cut up, since it's in a can). Saute the veggies while the chicken browns. Mix up the sauce with some red wine vinegar, ketchup (I was stunned, but really, ketchup), sugar and honey. Throw the veggies in the pan with the chicken (once it's done) and cover with the sauce. Simmer for an extra 4-5 minutes. Dinner was on the table in less than 30 minutes! Woo Hoo!
Update:
Skiing today! There is only about 2 weeks left in the ski season, so we just HAD to go up today. Unfortunately, it was about 70 F up at the top of the mountain.
While I wasn't skiing, the others told me that the conditions were bad. Really, really bad. It was slushy and ucky most of the day.
That being said, Ryan did go up with Grandpa and Patrick for 2-3 runs. Once they were done, Grandpa took him on the beginners area and he practiced his turns. No really, he actually went around the cones, correctly! I was stunned. I'd been trying to get him to do that all season! Woo Hoo!
Katie, Allen and Connor went up on the slopes together, and they did great. Allen stayed with them on the intermediate slopes, and he said they all skied really well.
After skiing, Patrick and I had to run into Belt, and we started counting hawks. Yes, hawks, like the birds. By the time we got home, we were over 20. I'm not sure if it's the warmer weather, or the fog lifting, but apparently, the hawks are out in full force today! Of course, I forgot my camera, (ugh!) or I would have gotten some great pictures... Maybe tomorrow...

March 16, 2012
Outside Temp: 50 F (we got a little rain today, which is awesome because it makes the dirt roads not as dusty!)
What I cooked today:
Split Pea Soup: It's a Friday during Lent, so no meat. Which is just fine since we all really like this soup! There was a little debate as to whether it was a soup or a porridge, but I guess it doesn't matter what you call it. It was really filling and we didn't even notice there was no bacon or ham!
French Bread: I wanted to make a bread to go with the soup, but I was a little nervous using Grandma's Artisan bread recipe. It would have been better, since I forgot that the recipe I have for french bread makes 2 loaves of bread, not one. So, we had a very, very dense french bread. Oh well! They all liked it, and Connor thought it was like those Hawaiian rolls, that he smashes up into just a big ball of dough!
Update:
Katie got spend the day with a friend of hers, which meant that I got to spend time talking to another adult female who has kids in an age range similar to my own. Ahhh, how I've missed it!
The family has horses and cows and a dog and cats and even 2 little calves that needed feeding. We got to feed the calves, which was totally awesome. They are aggressive little guys, but so stinking cute. Katie couldn't keep the bottle in the calf's mouth, and he was getting a little annoyed with her. But, of course, she's still pretty little and I figured the calf could probably knock her over if he tried. Mine was a little less aggressive, or perhaps I just could handle him better. Of course, they are pretty sloppy, so we ended up with milk all over my jacket and pants. But it was totally worth it! I can imagine having a few calves of our own!
On the drive back home, there were a few new 'friends' on the road. And rather than just drive by and upset them, I stopped to take a picture.
There were a few Canadian Geese on the road earlier, but I think these are 'African Geese' (even though they are not from Africa), which are a domestic goose, descended from the Swan Goose. They seemed just fine with my presence, and the presence of my car. In fact, I had to drive around them, since the seemed to have no intention of moving out of my way. Beautiful birds!

Outside Temp: 42 F (ugh, all our beautiful snow is melting! Now, it's just slush!)
What I cooked today:
Walnut Chicken: Woo Hoo! I cooked! For the first time in a few days! I know, silly, but it was good to eat food that only cost about $5 for the whole family, and tasted good!
Update:
So, last night as we went to hook up Ryan's antibiotics, the syringe pump wasn't working. (The antibiotics get pushed in over about 30 minutes, and the pump pushes it in for us). That meant that we (meaning Patrick) had to sit there for 30 minutes, and push in about 1 cc (a really small amount) every minute for a half hour. It kind of sucked.
We called our home care, and even through it's Saturday, they were able to get us a replacement pump. We offered to go into Great Falls to get it, since we probably needed to go shopping anyway.
So, after church, Patrick and I jumped back into the car and drove into town. We stopped at the hardware store and the drug store and the grocery store (and even made a quick stop at Baskin Robbins). We even made it home in time to make dinner... granted dinner was around 9:30pm, but since it's Saturday, no one really cared.
On the drive back up to pick up the kids from the grandparents, a pretty, white bunny jumped out in front of the car. And, even though we've talked for years about not stopping for animals, Patrick still put on the brakes. Fortunately, for both us and the rabbit, we missed him. Lucky bunny..

Outside Temp: 19 F (a little windy, but just beautiful!)
What I cooked today:
French Toast: So, I've been making french toast for years, with mostly eggs and a splash of milk. But I looked at a recipe yesterday that had about 1 1/2 cups of milk to about 3 eggs. I was stunned. Who knew that french toast was supposed to be mostly milk, with just a few eggs? So, I made toast today with about 4 eggs and a lot more milk than I usually use. I also added in some vanilla. And while I was too busy to actually eat them, they smelled much more like the french toast smell that I love. Next time, I might actually have enough time to eat some myself!
Update:
By the way, on a totally unrelated topic, have any of you ever had that day where everything ticks you off? You wake up irritated, and every voice, every noise, everything around you just sets you off and you can't seem to control it. You find yourself yelling at the kids or your husband, for things that usually don't bother you? And worse yet, you know you are being unreasonable and you can't stop? No? Oh crap.. I mean, me either.
So, it's Sunday, which means it's a ski day!
We all headed up to the mountain late this morning. Patrick and Allen both said their boots fit much better since we talked to the ski guys in town on Friday. Ryan wasn't really in the mood to ski, so we only stayed on the slopes for about 1 1/2 - 2 hours, before we headed into the lodge for hot chocolate. I think he really just wanted the bag of toys I was smart enough to remember to bring.
About an hour later, Katie came wandering into the lodge. She said she had a headache, and was hungry and wanted some Italian soda. About 30 minutes later, Connor came in and said he was done for the day.
So the 3 kids and I hung out in the lodge for another hour, playing cards and reading and munching on fries. Allen showed up and helped me keep Ryan occupied, allowing Patrick and Grandpa about 30 minutes of freedom. Then we all packed up and headed out to the Lazy Doe for steaks and burgers.
On the way down the mountain, I stopped to get a Sunday paper (I love my coupons) and we found the item below in a shopping cart. Patrick insisted that I get a picture with the kids.

I know there is a story to this deer head in a shopping cart, but I haven't asked yet. It's almost more fun to let the kids come up with a story on their own!

Outside Temp: 37 F (and dropping... it's supposed to be in the 20's tonight and into the single digits by tomorrow night... we'll see... )
What I cooked today:
Pancakes: I'm getting pretty good and making these... It's Alton Brown's recipe, and you make your own 'pancake mix', similar to Bisquick. Then you add the butter, buttermilk and eggs to the mix when you're ready to use it. It's really thick, but makes really great pancakes. And I think it's cheaper than Bisquick, since it's just flour, salt, sugar, baking powder and baking soda.
Walnut Chicken: We got home late from town, but everyone still wanted to eat. Spoiled children. Fortunately, I had left the chicken out to defrost, so it was pretty easy. I even made up Fried Rice to go with it. We finally had dinner on the table around 10pm!
Update:
We went to church and then Patrick and I ran into town. But first, we went for a little drive up to the house that might be for sale. On the way, I saw a new friend, pictured below. He was kind enough to pose for me! I've been wanting to get this picture for a few months, ever since I saw him the first time. Okay, so it's probably not the same guy, but he's a close relative!

December 27, 2011
Outside Temp: 43 F (and windy... not really cold, just a little chilly because the wind is pretty cold. I heard the speed was around 50 mph at one point.)
What I cooked today:
Beef Stew: Since Allen went skiing, I figured he'd want something warm when he got home. It was all in the crock pot by noon, which meant it was done by 7...
Update:
Allen went skiing with Grandpa and his uncle today. I didn't go, so I don't have any pictures. But I heard that since he was so tired, he fell 3 times, which is a first for this season. Of course, when you go to bed around 2am, then try to get up around 9am, for a few days straight, you are bound to be a little tired and not perform at your best. I've told him to get some sleep tonight and maybe he can do better tomorrow.
I also went into town today. I wasn't sure if I really had to go shopping, but since I hadn't been since before Christmas, I was pretty sure I needed milk. I ended up meeting up with someone from the hospital, and we chatted for a few minutes. It was nice to talk to a hospital employee outside of the hospital!
I didn't hit any deer on the way home, which is good, since I saw about 10 on the drive in. I was pretty sure they would be on the road, so I was smart enough to drive home slowly behind a big rig. That way, if the deer decided to run out on to the road, the big rig would hit it and either a) it would be tossed gently to the side of the road or b) it would be shredded before it got to me, and I would only end up with some blood and guts, but my car would otherwise be fine. But the deer were smart enough to not get hit and test my theory.
I also saw birds flying south for the winter. Okay, so they weren't really flying south, more like west, and they weren't in the perfect V that you expect, but you get the point. Then, an entire flock of close to 100 Canadian geese were standing in the field as I drove past. (it may not have been 100, but it seemed like a lot, so I'm exaggerating for effect) The wind was pretty bad, so I'm assuming that they were blown out of the sky. But who knows? Maybe they were flying south, and then decided that it was better in Montana, so they decided to stay. :)
Today was the awesome relaxing day, where the kids (except Allen) stayed in bed until at least noon. Ryan didn't wake up until about 3pm. Katie is feeling a little ucky (bad tummy), so she's been in and out of bed all day. But, fortunately, since we had nothing to do today, we didn't miss out on anything!
